Drawing the Line

It was an amazing day when I shot these images. I spent the day at the Forks which is always wonderful however the beautiful sunshine made it even better. Due to the bright sun there were light and shadows everywhere. Great for shooting lines. Some of the challenges for me were in finding the best framing. My camera doesn't always depict or register what I think my eye is seeing through the viewfinder. I love line so this assignment was fun for me. It is like a scavenger hunt trying to find just the right angle or image that we might overlook otherwise.

Almost Famous!

I was asked if I ever had a brush with greatness? I have been fortunate to meet several well known people over the years. Some of my experiences have been more interesting than others. My father-in-law is very well known and respected in the world of business. He has been very active in a business award evening called the IDEA awards. "IDEA" stands for International Distinguished Entrepreneur Awards. Through this evening I have met several business leaders including Richard Branson (Virgin Records/Airlines) and Martha Stewart to name a couple. Richard Branson is a very flirtatious, friendly, fun loving, quick witted man. We were at a very formal dinner but after he took all the students from U of M Asper business school who attended to a bar and partied with them. He of course picked up the bill!

Every year our family has a photo taken with the recipient of the IDEA award. This is not my favorite moment because I would much rather be behind the camera then in front of it. When it was time for us to gather together around Martha Stewart, I was off taking to someone and my husband pulled me into the shot at the last minute. So here we have a wonderful family picture with Martha and my head floating above everyone else from behind. Not very attractive and actually quite pathetic!!

Why Photography?

I have to thank a former boyfriend for introducing me to the world of manual photography. He had a Canon 35mm film SLR that we took to the Zoo and shot off a ton of film. That was 25 years ago, the boyfriend is long gone but I still have some of the photographs!!

My life took me in all different directions but I have always enjoyed photography as a hobby and now I have the opportunity to really invest time and energy into this art form. I hope to learn everything I can in the diploma program. I want to know both digital and film techniques so well that in the moment of creative spirit I don't get tied down or limited by a lack of technical knowledge. I also am looking forward to be inspired by other students and instructors in order to ignite my passion of photography even more.

Favorite Photography

I love images that tell a story or are just visually exciting. Ansel Adams' large format photographs are amazing for clear, striking landscapes in black and white. I love high contrast and clearly defined range of grays. I also enjoy beautiful colour images, patterns created by light and some images with a quirky sense of humour.
